Now crumble isn’t rocket science but when you’re only four, it’s nice to have a dish that you feel like you’ve made all by yourself. [Read on...]
Strawberry picking was a frequent activity in my childhood although collecting blackberries from the “wild” is a new experience. Walthamstow, an urban sprawl in East London, sits between a surprising amount of green space courtesy of the Lea Valley and Epping Forest. Criss crossing under the various railway lines that streak through Lea Valley’s [Read on...] This post is part 5 in my series of 6 about Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, Raymond Blanc’s Oxfordshire hotel and cookery school. Scroll down to the bottom of this post for a list of other posts in this series covering the accommodation, dinner, breakfast and garden at Le Manoir. Today sees the second [Read on...] Even though pancake day is relatively late this year, it still feels like it’s come round really quickly. Is it March already? We still have my sister in law’s family’s Christmas presents in the living room, I swore this year they would not hang around until Easter again but it seems history is repeating. [Read on...] The February 2011 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Mallory from A Sofa in the Kitchen. She chose to challenge everyone to make Panna Cotta from a Giada De Laurentiis recipe and Nestle Florentine Cookies. I had a couple of problems with this challenge. I made the biscuit batter nice and early but it [Read on...] Any notion I had about the inaugural Forever Nigella being a flash in the pan was swept away this month when SIXTY of you were well and truly Seduced by Chocolate for Forever Nigella #2. Without further to-do let’s linger over all our wonderful slinky chocolate smothered entries. You may like to take the [Read on...]
Gibanica (ghee-ban-itz-er) is filo pastry baked with yogurt, egg and oil. It frequently includes salty white cheese similar to feta. I have enjoyed the cheese version many times, it’s equally tasty straight from the oven for dinner or cold for breakfast. With some yogurt and left over filo triangles from a Turkish supermarket I made these mini gibanicas, my version of a Balkan pastry dish. [Read on...]
Beyond heating cream and blitzing chocolate in the food processor, all you need to do with these puddings is pour into the glasses and lick the spoon afterwards. [Read on...] Apples are what I have though, not enough to supply a cottage industry but enough to make a few puddings and possibly some apple chutney and sauces for the freezer. [Read on...] As a slack Daring Baker of late, I’m surprised I’ve not been kicked out. I keep having other cakes due on the 27th when we post our challenges and have not been organised enough to get DB finished and written up first. The March and April challenges didn’t inspire me and I was away [Read on...] “Oh how we laughed… on the way to the burns unit,” was a favourite witticism of a former colleague whenever someone did something stupid that nearly went horribly wrong. I almost set fire to my hair making these Crepes Suzette. It wasn’t my day, having already dropped the digital SLR camera on the floor, [Read on...] Spotting romantic gestures from my husband requires the expert eye that comes after almost 14 years of being together. I knew to expect this from our first Valentine’s night out together. Trudging around Shepherd’s Bush, totally unprepared, from restaurant to restaurant hunting for a table, we ended up in the usual curry house. Apart [Read on...] Whilst flying around this week making charity cupcakes for Cake A Difference and panicking that I’ve not yet done my Mactweets Macarons or any Valentine’s desserts either, I can at least relax in the knowledge that I have two more pancake recipes ready to share. This Scotch pancake and ice cream stack was another [Read on...] What to do, what to do with a heap of egg yolks from my various macaron making disasters? (See here and here if you haven’t experienced these yet). Having recently done the mince pie ice cream I opted this month for some flavoured custards. First up is chocolate custard pudding. I have based this [Read on...]
There will be quinoa, there will be tofu and there will be beansprouts. But not today. It’s very early January and you’ve probably got a fridge full of holiday ingredients knocking about. A nice big ham cooked in Coca Cola in the Crockpot, half a pack of vacuum packed chestnuts, the remains of the [Read on...] I am a little late posting about these. I actually made them just before my recent weekend away in Provence (to be blogged shortly). My monthly Bake Five challenge using Donna Hay’s Modern Classics: Book 2 has not been going very well. Of the five recipes I have now completed, this is the only [Read on...] |
