My son’s eating habits are baffling me at the moment. At home he’s a fussy little jack in the box who says “I don’t like this, I don’t like that” and leaps about at the table never sitting still. From nursery I get reports that he has been offered a veritable smorgassbord of: [Read on...]
Has anyone noticed I’ve not published anything for two weeks? No? Didn’t think so. I’ve reached a point recently where sitting on the sofa watching Mad Men with my husband is more appealing than writing blog posts until 1am. [Read on...]
Missing Danger Mouse was bad enough but being unable to discuss Grange Hill in the playground next morning was miserable; the nadir being missing Danny Kendall dying in Mr. Bronson’s car. [Read on...]
I’ve just drowned in Wikipedia, as I often do. Writing this blog post has reminded me of two things, my beloved Italian friend Anastasia answering the phone with an efficient “Pronto!” (meaning “ready!”) and that the favoured supermarket of my childhood was the now sadly defunct Presto (meaning “fast”). Wikipedia has a whole list [Read on...]
Now Nigella Lawson’s Rapid Ragu may sound a darn sight more stylish with it’s panetta and canned puy lentils but it’s not a million miles from those meaty (and slightly freaky) pasta sauces I used to cook up on the kind of cooker that now belongs in the Geffrye Museum. [Read on...]
Today’s dish of pesto pasta salad can be served warm or cold, it is ideal for making in bulk at parties, indeed it is my usual savoury contribution to short notice gatherings. If you make it with jarred pesto and keep a vacuum pack of olives in the cupboard and toss in some frozen peas you can make it entirely with store cupboard ingredients. [Read on...]
It wasn’t any quicker than making it on the hob, in fact at nearly 50 minutes including warm up time it was definitely longer but the beauty was that I had a perfect risotto without any stirring required. Heaven. Had I had the larger cooking dish seen at the demonstration (above bottom left), I think you could easily make risotto for 10 people in this way. [Read on...]
1997. Were you still up for Portillo? I was. Recently moved in with my boyfriend, now husband, in Shepherd’s Bush, West London, I was still registered to vote in Enfield and Southgate, the constituency which came to represent the fall of the last Conservative Government. Determined too that my local MP, Michael Portillo, would [Read on...]
Spar was the local supermarket on the Midland’s council estate where I spent my teenage years. With humming fridges and strip lighting, it sold things like Vesta curries and crusty rolls in a giant plastic tube with a hole at the bottom from which you pulled your bread before decanting it into a polythene [Read on...]
These little guys were the result of my tea time cooking last night. I had some minced turkey to use and wanted something more interesting than a pasta bolognaise sauce. I normally coat my meat balls with flour but in search of an alternative in my cupboard I decided upon polenta. The selection of [Read on...] |
