Ever since we met, my husband has waxed lyrical about his personal Shangri-la, a restaurant with STOP and GO signs on the tables indicate to the waiter you would like meat, meat and yet more meat to be served. That was Brazil twenty years ago but now the concept has reached London. Cabana is [Read on...]
Reviewing restaurants has not been a top priority for me recently, however I was intrigued to hear about the tapas nights at The Counter Cafe. Although I’m rarely reviewing restaurants anymore unless they’re done Dinner With Crayons style or places known for their patisserie or puddings, I wanted to visit as the Olympic park [Read on...]
It’s ideal for small spaces where single cups of tea or coffee are desired and lack of space renders a kettle impractical; offices, student accommodation…. one’s mother’s narrowboat…. over to you Rose: This is easily the most useful nifty little gadget I’ve seen in a long time. The machine is tiny, taking barely the space of a small electric kettle, and as there’s no water storage tank, you literally fill your cup or mug with water, pour into the top of the unit and press the button. it’s not even that loud, a puff of steam and hey presto, in the thirty seconds it took me to put coffee and sugar in the mug, the water was dispensed.

Marber’s books advocate sensible eating plans that re-educate you to eat healthily and prevent weight gain. No seaweed milkshakes here. [Read on...]
Now in my final (phew!) of the 12 Days of Christmas Giveaways, I have a set of these hanging utensils to give away… [Read on...]
Beyond heating cream and blitzing chocolate in the food processor, all you need to do with these puddings is pour into the glasses and lick the spoon afterwards. [Read on...]
One day classes at the school include bread making, Thai food and seasonal dinner party menus. Half day classes include hands-on chocolate class (which sounds messy!), canapes and cocktails, Michelin star pastry desserts, wine and cheese course and petit fours. [Read on...]
My favourite use of tortilla wraps is the quesadilla. You can put anything in a quesadilla, it’s the Mexican answer to toasted sandwich much like Croque Monsieur is for the French. [Read on...]
It wasn’t any quicker than making it on the hob, in fact at nearly 50 minutes including warm up time it was definitely longer but the beauty was that I had a perfect risotto without any stirring required. Heaven. Had I had the larger cooking dish seen at the demonstration (above bottom left), I think you could easily make risotto for 10 people in this way. [Read on...]
Long before Guggenheim-wannabe Selfridges upstaged The Rotunda on the Brum skyline, the Mailbox restaurant and shopping complex had pushed the second city more upmarket. For many years, knocking down the Bull Ring was little more than urban myth. As an adopted Londoner, Birmingham city centre was not on the itinerary for quick visits to [Read on...]
The theme of this month’s Mactweets Macaron Challenge was “spring flowers”. I have deviated from this a little and taken my inspiration from what spring means to me, it’s Mother’s Day and my mother’s birthday always follows shortly afterwards. My mother’s name is Rosemarie so I decided to make this month’s macarons using rosemary paired with lemon. [Read on...]
Now I don’t want you to eat seventeen of these cupcakes, it is the name of the shop they came from. My local deli is called Eat17 since we live in the postcode East 17. Quite a few of my friends have been asking whether I’ve tried the cupcakes in Eat17 so I have [Read on...]
Today we paid one of our regular visits to Whitstable in Kent. It is one of the closest seaside places to East London and traffic permitting, we can be there in around 1 hour 15 minutes. Our previous trip had been in the spring of this year where we had been dismayed by the impact [Read on...]
I have had my first culinary disaster. They don’t look that bad I hear you say? Well let me explain… My intention had been to make chocolate and blueberry flavour cupcakes with my friend’s son’s name on them which I would take to her tea party this week. Also I was using them as [Read on...]
My mother and I are having a shopping mission in Oxford Street today. Our day started in the basement of John Lewis looking at baking equipment and we continued to Divertimenti in Marylebone High Street, then onto Emma Bridgewater and Cath Kidston in Marylebone High Street followed by M&S at Marble Arch and Selfridges. [Read on...]
More of the same here except I have used Silver Spoon White Chocolate Cake Covering instead of either ordinary white chocolate or Silver Spoon Milk Chocolate Cake Covering. I like topping cakes with chocolate as you don’t have to faff about getting the consistency of icing correct. So it is nice and quick for practising [Read on...]
Today’s batch are for my Big Lunch girlfriends who are coming round tonight to celebrate our successful Big Lunch Street Party on 19th July. These cakes have a chocolate base and are presented in gold foil cases. On the top I have used Silver Spoon Milk Chocolate Cake Covering. It doesn’t taste so good as [Read on...]
More Big Lunch cupcakes. You cannot see the chocolate base so take my word for it that it is there. I really liked working with melted chocolate – and since I have acquired a microwave since my last occasion melting chocolate I didn’t even have to mess about with the double boiler. Having said [Read on...]
